the guggenheim celebrates its 50th birthday on october 2009. whether you think it looks like a seashell, a snail or a giant cinnamon roll, there’s no denying that the building is absolutely unique. wright was inspired by the ziggurat, a monumental form from ancient mesopotamia that got narrower as it rose - a design idea he turned on its head, creating a building of unlikely top-heavy proportions that manages to look graceful, even elegant.
